Action drama about how extraordinary heroes emerge out of ordinary lives. While trying to rescue a trapped civilian, firefighter Jack Morrison (Joaquin Phoenix) finds himself trapped and surrounded by flames. Outside Fire Chief Mike Kennedy (John Travolta), battles to get his friend out alive. As Jack awaits rescue, he reflects, moment by moment, year by year, on how he got himself into this predicament.
