Texan Pentecostal preacher Euliss 'Sonny' Dewey (Robert Duvall) is outraged when he is voted out of the church he helped to found, and turns to violence when he discovers that his wife Jessie (Farrah Fawcett) is having an affair with a younger preacher. After attacking the man with a baseball bat, Sonny goes on the run, re-baptising himself 'the Apostle E.F.' and setting out to preach the good book in Louisiana in an attempt to find salvation and redeem himself. Sonny starts up a new congregation, working as a short order cook to make ends meet and preaching over the radio. However, after Jessie hears one of his broadcasts the net begins to close in around him. (Universal Pictures UK)
