Gerd, a French-oriented film journalist, and her husband, a painter named David, are forced by the imminent outbreak of World War II in 1939 to end their sojourn in France. On the train, she experiences a brief romance with a mobilized Frenchman, Pierre. The episode causes her to end her marriage and to commence the life of a single mother, torn between child and work, struggling to be able to realize a film project. And the whole time, she searches for some sign that Pierre is still alive. (official distributor synopsis)
