Third part of trilogy. In the face of the sudden Russian invasion, Kaji and a handful of survivors fight their way to southern Manchuria. Murder treachery and other vicious crimes are rampant as the Japanese forces retreat. Kaji intends to fight his way back to his wife but is taken prisoner by the Russians and held in a prison camp. Here he learns at first hand that his ideas about Socialism are a far cry from reality. Finally Kaji escapes and attempts to make his way back to his wife who has been waiting for him, he stumbles onwards. Eventually he is unable to continue, he falls and is enveloped in the falling snow. (British Film Institute (BFI))
