Russian Tsar Nicholas II (Michael Jayston) and his German wife Alexandra (Janet Suzman) are driven apart as personal and social circumstances conspire against them. Their only son is born a haemophiliac, and Alexandra becomes obsessed with faith healer Rasputin (Tom Baker).
