Second part of a trilogy. Kaji joins the army and distressed by the suffering of his fellow recruits attempts to speak out against this cruelty, he is suspected of having Communist tendencies as is his friend Shinjo. One day Shinjo tries to escape and Kaji is injured when he attempts to rescue him. After leaving the hospital he is sent to a different unit where on meeting an old friend he is promoted. Finally after the surrender of Germany, Russia turns its attention to the small Japanese units and Kaji and his troops are attacked. (British Film Institute (BFI))
