Recently retired insurance actuary Warren Schimdt (Jack Nicholson) is struggling to adjust to his newfound freedom and finds his wife Helen extremely irritating. When she suddenly dies, Warren discovers some letters indicating that she once had an affair with his friend Ray and was therefore also unhappy in the marriage. This spurs Warren to take to the road and he sets out on a two week journey across country to reluctantly attend his daughter's wedding; he idolises his daughter and thinks she is marrying beneath her. However, when he arrives at his destination, he not only has to deal with his doubts about the marriage, but also has to take on the groom's hippy mother Roberta (Kathy Bates).
