This famous Finnish novel on which this film is based has been filmed four times. Stiller, the first director to be caught by the intensity of the story, assembled a very able cast to present his now-classic drama of unrequited love. In the sequence in which the character Olof scrutinizes his face in a mirror, the face he sees is his own. But it is really his inner self he is seeing, too. This sophisticated way of depicting character development was highly effective. (official distributor synopsis)
