Though the main focus of the story is the daily lives of a small group of people during the post-war Soviet Union, the enduring importance of the film comes from its early science fiction elements. It primarily tells of a young man, Los (Russian: Лось, literally Elk), traveling to Mars in a rocket ship, where he leads a popular uprising against the ruling group of Elders, with the support of Queen Aelita who has fallen in love with him after watching him through a telescope. It's quite political at times, but considering it was created at a time when the revolution was still quite lively and all those ideas hadn't been degenerated by Stalin, it holds weight. And I must say, some scenes really gave me chills, not because I was scared of their ideological message, but because they resonated quite powerfully. What's undoubtedly the best aspect of the film is its visuals, especially the costumes; they're beautiful and could actually work in modern sci-fi.
