English "We can't change the past... the least we can do is remember it." This classic courtroom drama, where the renowned screenwriter Eszterhas (born Eszterhás) projected his personal experiences of betrayal, disappointment, and a broken heart from the actions of a close person, also reflects on how repeated lies become subjective truths that wash away guilt. The experienced Costa-Gavras added a touch of leftist grievance, though it must be noted that it was done in a defensible manner given the subject matter. An interesting tidbit from the filming is that Armin Mueller-Stahl faced difficulties obtaining a U.S. visa due to suspicions of close ties with the Stasi. However, no one seemed to mind that Jessica Lange had collaborated with King Kong. ()
