Years before he exorcises the devil from Regan McNeil, Father Merrin (Stellan Skarsgård) encounters true evil in Paul Schrader's prequel to the 1973 horror classic. When his faith dries up, Merrin leaves the priesthood, heads to Africa as an archaeologist and unearths a perfectly preserved ancient church. Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist is a film with a building atmosphere and some moments can satisfy the soul of horror audiences. However, overall it's too straightforward and tries too hard to create a bridge to The Exorcist. Stellan saves it with his acting and personality, but overall, this film still doesn't rise above average and it lacks the necessary gravitas and strength of characters.
