Key West in 1940 plays host to a thriving salvage business based on the many wrecks of ships found in the vicinity. Always first on the scene is King Cutler (Raymond Massey), arousing the suspicions of ship owner Loxi Claiborne (Paulette Goddard). Loxi's suitor, Captain Jack Stuart (John Wayne), is also implicated in the scam, thanks to the accusations of lawyer Steve Tolliver (Raymond Milland), who wants Loxi for himself. This is such a bizarre genre hybrid that eventually leads to a showdown with a giant octopus, and I simply can't help but enjoy Pirates of the Caribbean. It's definitely not a perfect film, as it's sometimes too lighthearted, overall a bit overcooked, and it jumps from plot point to plot point, even though it's somewhat obvious how it will end. But still, it's something worth seeing. ()
