Clint Eastwood directs and stars as Josey Wales, a peaceful farmer at the time of the American Civil War who becomes a Confederate outlaw in order to avenge his family's death at the hands of Union guerillas. His obsession with revenge slowly lifts, however, as he picks up various outcasts in the wilderness. Wales tries to protect his new 'family' by leading them to a safe haven where they can rebuild their lives. (Warner Bros. Home Entertainment)

Clint Eastwood demonstrates how close the western genre was to him, and how much he tuned into it. He managed to create a character that mostly aligns with the classic spaghetti western archetype but also overall shifts elsewhere, becoming something different, something new. The finale isn't in line with the classic tone of a western, and it's as if the genre itself is changing along with the character of Wales. ()
