The legendary Max Ophuls directs this tense and stylish 1949 film noir melodrama. Joan Bennett stars as a suburban housewife who covers up a murder to protect her teenage daughter, only to find herself blackmailed by an immoral small-time crook, played by James Mason. (Powerhouse Films)

Considering that James Mason took the lead role, although the main character here is a woman, I expected a grand acting performance. James Mason is great once again, but story-wise, the film didn't really resonate with me. The beginning is good, but afterward, it rides on a rather weak wave and fails to captivate the viewer. The ending doesn't save it either. ()
