Dr Alex Harris (Fritz Weaver), a top computer scientist develops a groundbreaking artificially intelligent computer that has almost limitless powers. When the computer, called Proteus IV, is refused permission to test its cure for leukaemia, it thinks that its creator is about to pull the plug on it, and hatches a plan with a robot servant to wreak its revenge - a plan that will ultimately involve the scientist's estranged wife, Susan (Julie Christie).
