May 2011: A man is arrested for sexually assaulting a hotel chambermaid... Mr. Devereaux is a powerful man. A man who handles billions of dollars every day. A man who controls the economic fate of nations cannot, it seems, control his own sexual appetite. The events that followed laid bare his failures and ultimately led to his dismissal from public office.Welcome To New York: Directed by Abel Ferrara, legendary actor Gerard Depardieu plays Devereaux: a man consumed by his own ego, arrogance and believing nothing is out of his reach be it political power or the objects of his lust. This film was inspired by a court case, the public stages of which have been filmed, broadcast, reported and commented on throughout the media worldwide. Nonetheless, the characters portrayed in the film and all sequences depicting their private lives remain entirely fictional, no one being able to claim the ability to recreate the complex truth of the lives of the protagonists and witnesses in this case, about which everyone has his or her own point-of-view. English Gérard Depardieu plays a pretty intense character here. The first hour actually reminded me a bit of The Wolf of Wall Street, with his wild escapades as a high-powered politician. But then the second half loses that energy—probably because, by that point, Gérard’s character ends up in jail. The biggest issue with this film, though, is that nothing really interesting happens. Unless, of course, you count Gérard stripping nude in a prison cell. ()
