1945, just before the end of the war: Vienna is in the process of forming the Second Republic’s provisional government. At the same time, thousands of Jewish prisoners and forced labourers from Hungary are being marched through the Austrian province towards the Mauthausen concentration camp. Due to a break in the National Socialist chain of command, a group of Jews becomes stranded in a secluded village. With the group unable to continue, one of the Jews, a former opera singer, convinces his fellow sufferers to put on a version of the operetta “Wiener Blut” in a hay barn. The arrival of the strangers not only sparks a wave of anti-Semetism and cold inhumanity amongst the villagers but also awakens their longing for a life with music and love. (Zurich Film Festival)
