Nerve

A pleasantly paced film that keeps going from start to finish. Currently, it's not such an original topic, but the film has good characters and great drive. It carries the film throughout and doesn't stop until it's over. Sure, it could have turned out differently, it could have been grittier, but even so, it's not bad. (21/10/2016)

This is one of those films where I don't understand why it's so terribly underrated. After all, how else should a thriller look these days? It's got incredible pacing, more suspense than ten good horror movies combined, a likable main character and a handsome lead, so what more could you ask for? I’ve cooled off a bit, but it took a lot for me not to bump Nerve into my top ten list the second I got out of the theater. I’m sure I still won't be able to hold back after the next viewing because it's awesome! (20/01/2017)

Teenagers deserve their movies, and Nerve does that well, however much its focus on the current state of social interaction makes it topical for about four minutes. Still, it does an excellent job visually of looking at the world through the screen, especially with the neon lights nonsensically strewn about the set, the accentuation of color, the frequent up shots, or the overall conception of big-city youth as an extravagant fashion show. The real world is thus loosely intertwined with the virtual one, reflecting the concept of seeing reality through a colored image, where I can always choose what reality will look like. The soc-transition itself predictably gets brutally out of hand at the end and the film turns into total idiocy, but up to that point it's quite enjoyable, constantly stirring the pot and, most importantly, visually captivating. I don't give a damn about how illogical it was, because I just enjoyed it. Nerve has a likable central couple, a very decent pace, plenty of suspense and a great soundtrack. Far from being just about entertainment, the movie also serves as a warning about the negative impact of modern technology and social networks on the lives of young people. Rapper Machine Gun Kelly makes a couple of cameo appearances as the bad guy and clearly enjoys it. (75%) (17/07/2022)

A film aimed at and designed for today’s internet generation as its target audience. It sort of warns against the dangers of the virtual world, highlighting that it’s not smart to put our personal information online, as it can end up in the wrong hands. Essentially, the film told me what I already knew, but I liked the way it presented it. I can’t help but feel that the film starts off a bit like a comedy, though that doesn’t last long. I expected far more suspenseful moments, but I didn’t get that, which was a bit disappointing. The lead duo was likable and well-matched, so there’s not much to criticize there. Even though it was supposed to be a thriller, as I mentioned earlier, there were only a handful of such elements. Sometimes the film seemed to act like it was being funny, even when it wasn’t really. The concept had some merit, but it definitely had more potential. The ending was pretty ordinary, with nothing that stood out. It’s certainly not a bad film, but nothing convinced me to watch it again, and mainly, I didn’t feel like it had a $20 million budget because it didn’t show. I give it 64%. (21/06/2017)
