The whimsical Juhász Kata chases even her latest suitor away. Rich relatives arrive for the engagement ceremony, and for 100 pengoes she hires Szabó Péter, the chief engineer, whom she found fishing on the banks of the Danube and who is like a vagabond, to replace the dismissed fiancé. Later she marries him of sheer defiance, in order to get access to the legacy of her mother and to be financially independent. Szabó Péter, however, tames the pampered, hysterical girl in the thatched little country cottage of his parents, turning her into a mild and diligent woman, and the nominal marriage becomes a true one.
