Plots(1)
A magistrate, administrator of an isolated frontier settlement on the border of an unnamed empire, looks forward to an easy retirement until the arrival of colonel Joll, whose task it is to report on the activities of the barbarians and on the security situation on the border. Joll conducts a series of ruthless interrogations. The treatment of the barbarians at his hands and the torture of a young barbarian woman combine to lead the magistrate to a crisis of conscience and a quixotic act of rebellion. Humanism personified by the guileless, worried face of Mark Rylance versus the chilling relentlessness of the modern inquisitor Johnny Depp and his right-hand man played by Robert Pattinson. In an unknown country and in an unknown time, the first two in particular play an amazing concert, which, in my opinion, the slow tempo does not detract from, but on the contrary, it favours. The division of the film into three acts resembles a theatre play, and a damn good one at that! ()
