The film takes places in a tiny village in the Mátra during World War II. The son of the reputable fire-chief who fights on the front lets his parents know that his commander, close to a nervous breakdown, would spend his holidays in their home. The postman loves the Tóth so much, that he does not deliver the letter containing the news about their son's death. For their son's sake the Tóths endure all the whims of the insomnia-ridden major, making paper boxes day and night like crazies. When he suddenly returns after saying farewell, the terrorized Tóth loses his temper and cuts him in four with the box-cutting machine. (official distributor synopsis)
