On All Souls Day, Macario, a Mexican peasant, is enjoying a rare feast when he is confronted by Death in disguise, who appears so desperate that Macario shares his food with the stranger. In return, Death gives him a gourd of water that will heal the sick - so long as Death grants approval. The liquid brings great fame and wealth to Macario - until the officers of the Inquisition come along and imprison him as an instrument of the Devil. He is given a single chance to escape his fate: if he can cure the Viceroy's ailing son, he will be set free. Will Death do his part? (Denver International Film Festival)
