John Frankenheimer directs Rock Hudson as a “second”: that is, the newly plastic-surgery altered “reboot” of, in this instance, a listless banker named Arthur Hamilton. Such procedures are carried out by a secret organization known only as “The Company,” with the promise of giving an individual a chance at making a fresh start at life… but at what cost? A very dark film about how even if life doesn't amuse a person, even if they want more and want to fulfill their dreams, it might not necessarily be what they achieve because sometimes there are obstacles in the way that they don't understand and don't see. Here, it's not so much about obstacles as it is about the darkness that permeates human society, represented by individuals and groups. The black-and-white picture helps a lot. ()
